No End to Syrian Miseries | Editorial

THERE appears to be no immediate end to miseries of Syrian people as the conflict over the last few years is gripping more and more areas into its fold while the regrettable part is that important world capitals especially Washington appears to be least interested to find peaceful solution of the conflict.
A string of suicide blasts and raids claimed by the militant Islamic State (IS) group killed more than 150 people in Southern Syria on Wednesday in what is being described as one of the deadliest assaults on the country. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the attacks hit several areas of the largely government held southern province of Sweida, where the militant group retains a presence in a desert place. Sweida whose residents are mostly from the Droze minority has relatively been insulated from the war that has ravaged the rest of the country since 2011. The attack on Sweida city indeed reflects that the militant group is spreading its tentacles in the country. The very statement of Russia on the attack is highly encouraging which emphasised the need for a coordinated and energetic effort by the international community to eradicate this regional evil from the Syrian territory. Indeed it should be done while protecting civilians, a difficult task when two big powers are engaged in a proxy war in a third country.
But we will urge the United Nations to play its due role for bringing the US, Russia and the Syrian government to viable negotiations as without ending acrimony amongst these parties, the militant elements cannot be tackled. If the US is really serious in eliminating the menace of terror from this region as well as others, it will also have to show commitment towards that end by taking genuine steps on the ground. Already blood of thousands of people has been spilled in the Syrian conflict while millions others were forced to abandon their homes and seek asylums in other countries. It is time to give a healing touch to the wounds and agonies of Syrian people not only by restarting the peace process but also making it tangible and result oriented.
