According to Wang Yi, a senior Chinese diplomat, it is about time that the US and China repair their previously soured bilateral relationship and start over fresh in order to work towards solving global issues together. Considering that the new administration has just been sworn in as the US government, it would seem as though the prospects of such a friendship are much better in the current scenario. One can hope that the two countries overlook the overarching narrative, which pits them against one another in the quest for global domination, imposed by experts and one that does not hold much currency within policy circles in Beijing.
Already, the Chinese President, Xi Jinping, talked about creating constructive approaches to resolve worldly issues, like the pandemic and climate change, on a call with the US President, Joe Biden. This was the first positive step to be taken towards the desire to improve relations between the two nations.
Considering all the technological, industrial, scientific and medicinal development being achieved within the borders of these two global giants, cooperation with one another would surely result in more innovative takes on solving issues across the globe. Even the political power that such an alliance would have is tremendous. As such, a little effort to establish a new friendship right now could be fruitful for the future that is to come.
It is imperative to note that the perceived competition between China and the US in the quest for supremacy is one that has been modelled by experts and policymakers alone. China has called for changes in the international landscape to promote unity and harmony. If joint efforts to eradicate the pandemic and control climate change can facilitate better relations between the two states, it will bode well for the world not only in the current situation but in later years as well.
