Deteriorating Relations | Editorial

With President Biden’s inauguration to the presidential office, there was hope for fostering a renewed friendship with China after Trump’s disastrous foreign policy measures left both countries on bitter grounds. With the proceedings of the Alaska Summit however, it has become clear that greater global cooperation may have slipped through our hands considering the inauspicious remarks exchanged between top officials from the USA and China. Our future may as well be the continuation of cyber conflict, technological struggle and an arms race between the two powers.

China has repeatedly expressed a desire to rebuild relations with the US after they faced a complete breakdown under Trump’s tenure. The Alaska Summit was being considered as a promising opportunity to achieve exactly that but with US Secretary of State, Antony Blinkin expressing ‘concerns’ about Chinese governance, the hopes for reconciliation took a nosedive.

As the Chinese diplomats went on the defensive after the immediate verbal assault, it became clear that finding cooperative common ground between the two states may be much harder than previously thought, especially considering the damage that has been done throughout the years. If the US continues with this approach for the next term as well, the prospects of forming a stronger bond with China, even on cordial terms will become grim.

The world we live in today demands for global powers to act in unison, providing each other the assistance that is needed for economic, medicinal and environmental recovery. Worldly problems require big and comprehensive solutions that one state, no matter how powerful it may be, cannot accomplish on its own. With the tussle between China and the US still ongoing, we can expect fierce economic competition driven by the political conflict between the two countries. A battle for technological and artillery advancement will ensue, creating two divisive blocs in the world—the very last thing we need in the status quo.
