Improved Relations | Editorial

If PM Imran Khan’s telephone call with President Vladimir Putin signifies anything, it is that relations between Pakistan and Russia are slowly improving into a potential long-term alliance. Both sides vowed to corroborate on various matters—including Covid-19, Afghanistan, energy provision and trade—and combine resources to make a positive difference in the world. Given that Russia is a key player in the region, nurturing this relationship is vital for us.

Russia and Pakistan embarked upon enhancing bilateral cooperation back in 2015 through the Stream Gas Pipeline Project but there were certain hesitations that prevented it from materialising. The project aimed to create a gas pipeline that connected Karachi to Lahore and was worth $2.5 billion.

Now, seven years later, work on the project is picking up again as both sides have agreed to move forward with its construction so that the energy concerns of Pakistan can be resolved. Once this project becomes a success, it will ensure that there is a consistent and reliable supply of energy in the region which is the need of the hour.

Another aspect that both parties talked about was aiding the fight against the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. Pakistan’s tireless efforts have done well in bringing attention to the issue and with Russia backing, there is more that can be done to help the people of Afghanistan. With more global actors on the side of easing tensions through removing restrictions imposed on the war-torn country, some progress might actually be achieved and enough pressure may be put to provide relief to the innocent who are suffering under the Taliban regime.

Healthy and active ties with Russia is an important opportunity for Pakistan that the government must not take for granted. Given the changing geo-economic situation of the region, and the world entirely, it is vital that we play our cards right and maintain positive relations with global players.a
