The positive conversation between Russian President Putin and Prime Minister Imran Khan is further proof of the region standing together amidst the seismic changes taking place in Afghanistan ever since the US withdrawal. The troika’s understanding of letting the Afghans decide their own future and avoiding unnecessary interference is the wisest course of action. As the days go by and the dust settles in Kabul and the surrounding areas, it is clear that the fighting must stop for the next administrative setup to be functional.

Our support to Afghanistan during this difficult time has been timely. When Afghan citizens that have worked with international governments and organisations could not find a way out of the country, Pakistan stepped in with air ferries and rescued over 7000 Afghan citizens to enable them to file for refugee status and work towards a long-term migration. All of this happened while the chaos at the airports and even at the Pakistani consulate made processing such cases very difficult—the US and other allies have still not been able to devise a means to do this properly.

The situation is far from settled in Afghanistan. Turkey’s ground troops that were looking to the security of the airport in Kabul have been asked to leave by the Taliban; the evacuation is already underway.

There are rumours of potential negotiations, or at least hopes of some talks between the northern alliance and the Taliban to avoid a bloodbath in Panjshir. This will help in bringing stakeholders from various groups to the negotiation table. The Taliban have also announced that there will be no disruptions to women’s work or going to school. As it stands, this is in line with their commitments to the international community; the only promise that we still need to see progress on is the action taken against non-state actors such as the TTP.

The only way for Afghanistan to finally rid itself of conflict is through forming an inclusive government and allowing for citizens to live their lives in peace and with their freedoms intact. Pakistan and the regional troika must keep reminding the international community that Afghan citizens need aid to survive; no one must wash their hands off this so easily.
