MULTI billion dollars China-Pakistan Economic (CPEC) project symbolises growing empathy of interest and vision of a shared politico-economic future on the part of two neighbouring countries. The mega project in fact has created a new framework of interaction on the basis of economic connectivity and regional cooperation having far reaching positive implications both for Pakistan and China.
It is heartening to note that despite earlier misperceptions and misunderstandings created by certain segments, the incumbent government of Pakistan is seeing the CPEC with broad lens and eyeing to further expand scope of the corridor project by including more subjects to it. Chairing a meeting in the Federal Capital on Monday, Prime Minister Imran Khan while stressing for early implementation of the corridor project said it will help realise the potential of bilateral economic relations for development of entire region. He especially mentioned that agriculture output of the country could be enhanced manifold by learning from Chinese expertise and employing latest technologies and efficient methods. As like any other important sector of economy, the Chinese agriculture sector has witnessed tremendous progress in terms of enhanced productivity and farmers’ income as well as making the sector resilient to bad weather conditions. China’s experience demonstrates the importance of institutional change, technological development, price and market liberalisation and rural development in improving food security, agricultural productivity. Thus, Pakistan has a lot to learn from the Chinese experience and as CPEC has brought the two nations further closer together, we expect that relevant authorities will sit together to explore avenues of cooperation in this field also which in fact will be a win-win situation. Indeed our focus should remain on early establishment of special economic zones which as also pointed out by the PM will help the local industry to grow and also create huge employment opportunities for the youth. The strategic importance of the CPEC can also be gauged from the fact that several other countries are expressing their interest to join it. Our government needs to enhance engagement with these countries as investment from there will also help the country address most of its economic woes and come out of the current economic difficulties.
